Asda is launching digital spirits display screens in 23 of its Express stores.
The supermarket has teamed up with Diageo to place digital touchscreens on shelves or displayed as separate units in alcohol aisles with integrated printers.
Shoppers will be asked to prove their age before selecting their spirit. Once selected, the interactive screens will print a ticket to be processed at the checkout. The product will then be picked by an Asda colleague who will authorise the sale following a standard Challenge 25 prompt.
The move should offer shoppers a larger choice of products without taking up more shelf space. Currently Asda Express stores stock a spirits range of 13 or 26 products, depending on size. The new way of working will enable the stores to increase the range to up to 50 products. The screens have already been rolled out in Hull, Surrey, London, Birmingham and Stoke on Trent.
